Reflections

As the end of the semester and graduation approaches, I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to intern for the City of Aurora and Mr. Clayton Muhammad. I learned so many things from the professionals around me and have grown so much from the daily observations in our work environment. It truly has been a blessing and I plan on continuing my time here in City Hall throughout the summer until I start grad school in the fall.

HELLO AURORA TELEVISION SHOW

Yesterday marked yet another milestone for me at my internship! My fellow intern Alex and I shot the footage for our pilot episode of "Hello Aurora." This will me the new show airing on ACTV within the next month or so. Myself and Alex will have full creative control over the show and the episode topics.

I had to sneak this picture in the other day. I accompanied Mr. Muhammad to the Fire Department to meet with the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and their media guy to help them with their Facebook page they were building. I sat and observed for the most part but I learned the guidelines for the city on social networks as Mr. Muhammad debriefed them on it. It also exposed me to the marketing aspect for the city via social networks such as the official city website, facebook, twitter, instagram, etc.

Aurora Borealis Newsletter

The Aurora Borealis is the official city newsletter that is released every two months. I have been sitting through all the Borealis meetings discussing the newsletter, as well as being issued the assignment of proof reading the editorials. In this edition, I had the opportunity to actually contribute. This was the education piece covering the HS graduations for the 2014 year.

Public Relations Conference Calls

I had to opportunity to sit in with Mr. Muhammad as he conducted a conference call with one of the top marketing agencies representing cities around the world. The person on the phone was actually from Canada. Through observing Mr. Muhammad, I learned how to cover all the details and how to speak appropriately when conducting a business meeting. The meeting was to see if we wanted to change our system of marketing the city via the internet. I learned a lot from that interview, especially from a business standpoint. It lasted about an hr and gained much knowledge from sitting in the meeting. I have had the opportunity to sit through a handful of city meetings since starting my internship.
